New Arrival: Ginger Galangal Red (Alpinia galanga)

Add exotic spice and healing power to your garden with our Ginger Galangal Red plants — a bold, tropical cousin of culinary ginger, now available for the first time in our nursery!

Highly prized in Southeast Asian cuisine, Galangal Red boasts striking reddish stems and aromatic rhizomes that bring a warm, peppery, citrus-like flavor to Thai curries, soups, stir-fries, and marinades. A must-have for authentic Tom Yum soup, it's also used in herbal teas, tonics, and digestive remedies.

Medicinal Properties

Galangal isn’t just a culinary gem — it’s valued in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and digestive benefits. Commonly used to:

  • Soothe upset stomachs and nausea

  • Support respiratory health

  • Boost circulation and immune function
It's a natural go-to for anyone seeking both taste and wellbeing.

How to Grow

  • Climate: Best suited to warm, frost-free areas or grown in pots for overwintering in colder regions

  • Light: Prefers partial shade to filtered sun

  • Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter

  • Water: Keep moist but not waterlogged — loves humidity

  • Growth: Forms clumping stalks with beautiful foliage and grows up to 1–1.5m tall

  • Harvest: Rhizomes are typically ready to harvest after 8–10 months

Plant in semi shade in well drained soil after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up. Plant them on a mound and harvest the roots once the tops have died off or in later winter, making sure you leave some in the ground to re-sprout in the the Spring.  You can also grow successfully in pots.

The Galangal Red plants also adds lush, tropical beauty to edible gardens — perfect for those who want both function and flair.
