VARIETIES
BROWN TURKEY (Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’) - A vigorous, productive tree, and one of the hardiest figs. Lots of purplish-brown skinned fruit with sweet pink flesh. It crops over a 3 month period, from February to April. The trees are tolerant of a wide range of conditions, including coastal. They prefer full sun, but will fruit in partial shade. Keep the roots moist till fruit forms, but don't over water. They don't need much manure either.
FRENCH SUGAR (Ficus carica ‘French Sugar’) – A compact, subtropical fig renowned for its exceptionally sweet, honey-rich fruit. Growing to around 2–2.5m tall, it’s perfect for smaller gardens or container culture. Vigorous and early to fruit, it produces generously on young wood. Hardy in mild climates, it thrives in well-drained soils and sunny positions. Moderate feeding and light pruning will keep it productive and well-shaped. Self-fertile.
DWARF VENTURA (Ficus carica ‘Ventura’) - These are dwarf trees that grow to about 2m high by 1.5m wide. They bear fabulous fruit on very young wood and are ideally suited to the small garden or for growing in containers. Moderately hardy, they will thrive in most soils, and tolerate wind. Plant in full sun, fertilise moderately, and prune for shape. Self fertile.
