Cherimoya ‘Daisy’ – Premium, Reliable & Exceptionally Flavoured

A variety developed in Northland. Tasty, large fruit with fewer seeds than some of the other varieties. Great for the home orchard, they have a long fruiting season, giving reasonable quantities of fruit for many months to help brighten the winter.

Cherimoya ‘Daisy’ is a highly regarded and well-performing subtropical fruit tree known for its consistent cropping, vigorous growth, and beautifully sweet, creamy fruit. This cultivar produces medium to large green fruit with smooth skin and luxuriously soft, custard-like flesh. The flavour is rich, classic cherimoya: sweet, aromatic, and often compared to a blend of banana, pineapple, and vanilla ice cream. ‘Daisy’ is a favourite among home growers for its excellent balance of eating quality and reliability.

This variety forms a strong, upright tree with large, lush, tropical foliage that adds instant character to any subtropical garden. It thrives in warm, well-sheltered locations where it can enjoy long, settled heat and protection from wind.

‘Daisy’ is known for setting fruit well when given the right conditions and responds especially well to hand pollination, which increases both crop size and fruit shape quality.

Cherimoya ‘Daisy’ performs best in fertile, free-draining soil and appreciates consistent moisture through the growing season. With good care, it becomes a rewarding and productive addition to gardens, home orchards, lifestyle blocks, subtropical plantings, and warm microclimates across New Zealand.

As it matures, it develops into a beautiful fruiting tree that delivers year after year.

A dependable choice for both beginners and collectors, ‘Daisy’ offers the perfect combination of hardiness, growth strength, and premium flavour. Whether planted as a feature tree or added to a mixed subtropical collection, it stands out as one of the most enjoyable and reliable cherimoya cultivars to grow.

Growing Tips

  • Warm Position: Choose a sunny, sheltered area with good heat accumulation.

  • Soil: Plant in fertile, free-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.

  • Watering: Keep evenly moist during spring and summer, especially during fruit development.

  • Hand Pollination: Increases yield and ensures consistent, well-formed fruit.

  • Shelter: Protect from strong winds which can damage foliage and reduce fruit set.

  • Frost: Young plants need frost cloth during cold periods; older trees tolerate light frost if sheltered.

  • Mulch: Maintain a thick organic mulch layer to keep roots warm and soil moisture stable.

Care Instructions

  • Planting: Position at the same depth as the pot, backfill with improved soil, and water deeply.

  • Establishment: Water regularly for the first two seasons to help develop a strong root system.

  • Feeding: Apply citrus/fruit tree fertiliser in early spring and midsummer to support growth and cropping.

  • Pruning: Light structural pruning helps shape the tree and improves airflow; remove weak or tangled growth.

  • Protection: Use frost protection when young, and provide wind shelter until well established.

  • Container Option: Can be grown in a large pot if given warmth, good drainage, and consistent feeding.
