Similar fruit to the lychee. Plant in warm conditions, shelter from wind, and water and manure well. Frost tender. 5m
Reasonably free draining soils are necessary, they are drought tolerant when established but require some water during drought times when young.
The Longan is a tougher tree than the Lychee and a lot less demanding as to soil and temperatures. Although coming from tropical areas they grow in upland areas and cool winter periods are needed for initiation of flower buds but they are not frost tolerant.
The fruit are similar to a Lychee, though usually a bit smaller, thin skinned with clear light white flesh and a dark seed hence the common name ‘Dragon Eye”.
The fruit is said to have many health benefits and is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine.
Grown from seed, so they will take 6-8 years to bear fruit. when they do, they are prolific and the fruit travels and stores well. Longan Trees are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Longan Tree will drastically increase the size of your crop.
