LUCUMA (Lucuma obovata) PB5 50cm
An attractive small tree with dark green leaves reaching a height of 3-4 metres in 10 years. The green skinned fruits grow to the size of an orange. The bright yellow flesh is firm and pleasantly cinnamon flavoured. Most often the pulp is made into a dessert, mashed with cream and honey and lemon juice. It can be dried and milled into a nutritious flour that stores well. The trees are extremely productive.

LYCHEE (Litchi Chinensis) PB3 30cm
These delicious fruit will be familiar in their canned form to many of you. They can be grown here in NZ, so you can taste the superior fresh fruit, but they have very particular climatic requirements. They like a warm humid climate, but then require a cool dry autumn in order to fruit. Cool winters are alright, but not more than -2, and not for prolonged periods. They are less fussy about soil, but do best in a light soil. It is a good idea to protect them from too much rain while they establish, but never let them dry out. Keep sheltered from wind and sun, and fertilise regularly with high nitrogen and potassium manure during spring and summer. The trees have handsome glossy leaves, and the fruit are borne in long panicles. They are self fertile. These are grown from seed so it will be quite a few years before any fruit can be expected.

MULBERRY - Black (morus nigra) PB6.5 80cm
The black mulberry is said to be the sweetest of all. The fruit is large and the trees are easy to grow. They are deciduous and will tolerate hard frosts, in fact they prefer a bit of chilling for good fruit set, but will still crop here in the north. The trees grow quickly and are not fussy about soil, but should not be allowed to dry out. They can be grown in containers or open ground. They can also be kept pruned to a suitable size for small gardens. Self fertile.

MULBERRY - Hicks (Morus) PB5 40cm
Mulberries are wonderfully sweet fruit that look like boysenberries but grow on trees. This is a heavy bearing variety much favoured in Australia. The tree is fast growing and relatively hardy. It can be planted in full sun and does not require much manure, but will do better for irrigation, or being beside a pond or creek. Prune back hard after fruiting, and you can keep the tree to a small size. The fruit on this are an attractive red colour.
